Rosuvastatin calcium is the active ingredient of the drug Crestor and the inactive ingredients of the drug include lactose, cellulose microcrystalline, calcium phosphate, crospovidone, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, glyceryl triacetate, titanium dioxide, red iron oxide and yellow iron oxide.
How Crestor Works?
Crestor belongs to a statin group of drugs that works by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver. In the human body, there are two types of cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol gets deposited in the arteries leading to clogging and narrowing of the arteries that increases the risk of heart disease. HDL cholesterol protects the arteries against the LDL cholesterol. Thus, patients suffering from high cholesterol are prescribed with Rosuvastatin that blocks the action of HMG-CoA reductase enzyme in the liver which is responsible for the production of LDL cholesterol. The reduced amount of LDL cholesterol in the liver cells causes them to take LDL cholesterol from the blood. Therefore, less cholesterol production in the liver and increased removal of LDL cholesterol from the blood ultimately reduces the LDL cholesterol level.
Rosuvastatin also causes increase in HDL cholesterol level and reduces the triglyceride levels in the blood. Thus, this drug results in lowering the LDL cholesterol level and increasing the HDL cholesterol level in the blood.
