Seroquel

Seroquel Composition

Seroquel contains the active ingredient Quetiapine. The inactive ingredients present in the drug include povidone, calcium hydrogen phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol and titanium dioxide. 25 mg tablets of Seroquel contain red ferric oxide and yellow ferric oxide whereas 100 mg and 400 mg tablets of Seroquel contain only yellow ferric oxide.

Quetiapine Mechanism

Schizophrenic patients may experience either positive or negative symptoms associated with this disease. Quetiapine has proved effective in treating both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. This drug works in the brain by affecting neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Neurotransmitters are chemicals stored in nerve cells that transmit messages between the nerve cells. Both dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitters are involved in regulating mood and behavior. In Schizophrenia patients there is an over activity of dopamine in the brain that basically results in delusions and hallucinations. Quetiapine blocks the receptors in the brain on which the dopamine acts, thereby preventing the over activity of dopamine that also control schizophrenia.
