Side Effects of Abilify

Side effects are unwanted response to a medication when taken at the normal dose. Almost all prescription medications are known to cause side effects. Abilify may also cause an increase in blood levels of prolactin hormone. This side effect will result in different consequences in men and women. Women can experience irregular or loss of menstruation and or decreased production of breast milk. Men can lose their sex drive or can experience erectile problems. Increased blood level of prolactin hormone for longer duration can lead to the risk of bone fractures or osteoporosis.

Abilify is known to cause adverse reactions while interacting with other drugs. It is important for one to discuss their medication profile with their doctor or pharmacist to avoid any unwanted drug interactions. The following drugs are known to increase the levels and effects of Aripiprazole:

  • Clarithromycin antibiotic such as Biaxin®
  • Antidepressants like fluoxetine, paroxetine and nefazodone
  • Antifungals like Diflucan, Nizoral and Sporanox
  • Antiarrhymia agent quinidine
  • HIV medications like protease inhibitors indinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir and lopinavir/ritonavir
Following drugs may reduce the effects and levels of Aripiprazole:
  • Carbamazepine
  • Rifampin
