Januvia Usage Instructions
Patients prescribed with Januvia must use it exactly as recommended by the doctor or must follow the directions given on the prescription label. One should not alter their own dosages as prescribed from the doctor since the dosages prescribed by the doctor was determined by factors such as the patient’s age, medical conditions for which they are being treated and the severity of the problem. Patients are advised to keep the following usage instructions in mind:
- One can take the medication with or without food.
- Blood sugar levels need to be regularly checked, as there are chances of low blood sugar in the diabetic patients. Such patients must keep a source of sugar.
- Patients must not change medication dose or schedule without consulting with the doctor.
- Sitagliptin is only a part of the complete treatment and should be complimented with diet, exercise and weight-control program.
- One should regularly use this medication to get the best result from it.
- The tablet can be broken or crushed if required.
- Januvia should be taken at the same time each day to maintain an even level of the diabetes medication in blood.
Dosages
Sitagliptin dosage is prescribed by the doctor depending upon the factors like how well the diabetes is controlled in the patient, other medical conditions of patients and other medications used by the patients. However, the recommended dose of Januvia for type 2 diabetes is 100 mg once in a day. Since this drug is cleared from the body with the help of kidney, patients suffering from kidney problems should start with lower dose of the drug.
Missed Dose and Overdose
Missing a dose of the drug is common among the patients. In case a dose of Januvia has been missed, patients must take it as soon as they remember. If it is almost the time for the next dose patients should skip the missed dose and resume with regular dose. Doubling the dose of Januvia is strictly not recommended.
Patients are advised to be careful in not accidently overdosing on the drug. If overdose has occurred, the patient must be immediately provided with necessary medical attention. Overdose victims may experience symptoms of low blood sugar that may include sweating, fast heartbeat, weakness, headache, irritability, confusion, stomach pain etc.
Storage Instructions

- Keep Januvia at room temperature 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C) and in a dry place.
- Discard the medicine if its expiry date has crossed.
- Keep Januvia away from the reach of children or pets.
