Lipitor Composition
Active Ingredient: Atorvastatin calcium is the active ingredient present in Lipitor.
Inactive Ingredients: Inactive ingredients present in the drug include calcium carbonate, candelilla wax, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, Hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, talc, titanium dioxide, polysorbate 80 and simethicone emulsion.
How does Atorvastatin work?
In patients having high cholesterol, fats and cholesterol get deposited along the walls of the arteries. As a result, blood flow is decreases which reduces the amount of oxygen supply to heart, brain and other vital parts of the body. Thus, such patients are prescribed with Atorvastatin. Atorvastatin works by blocking the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme in the liver, which is used by the body to make cholesterol. Production of less cholesterol in the liver forces liver to take up more cholesterol from the bloodstream. This results in lower cholesterol level in the blood thereby reducing the risk of blocked arteries which are the main causes to angina, heart disease, strokes and heart attacks.
