Plavix
Plavix is a thienopyridine class antiplatelet agent, used to prevent unwanted blood clots that generally occur after heart attack and strokes. Plavix reduces the chances of repeat stroke or heart attack. It is also found effective in maintaining the blood flow in patients suffering from coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease and cerebrovascular disease. This cholesterol lowering antihypertensive drug prevents platelets from sticking to each other to form clots. Composition
The active ingredient present in Plavix is Clopidogrel Bisulfate and the inactive or non-medicinal ingredients of this medication include mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol 6000, low-substituted hydroxypropyl-cellulose and hydrogenated castor oil. The pink coating on the tablet contains titanium dioxide, triacetin, red iron oxide, lactose and hypromellose and the tablets are polished with Carnauba wax.
Plavix Mechanism (How it Works?)
This medication is an antiplatelet agent that decreases the accumulation of platelets and prevents clot formation. Clopidogrel Bisulfate is the active ingredient present in Plavix. It is referred as blood thinning medicine that prevents platelets from clumping together. Adenosine diphosphate or ADP is a chemical present in the body that is responsible for blood clots. Plavix works by preventing ADP from binding to its receptors on platelets, thereby reducing the chances of clot formation in the blood. A blood clot can be quite dangerous, as it can cuts off the blood supply to an essential part of the body.
