Diovan
Diovan is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure in adults and children above the six years of age. It is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that is also used to treat heart failure and to lower the risk of death after a heart attack in adults. This drug prevents blood vessels from narrowing that improves blood flow and thus lowers the blood pressure. Manufactured by Novartis, Diovan can be taken alone or in conjunction with other blood pressure medications to manage the high blood pressure symptoms. Patients taking Diovan must be aware that this drug does not cure hypertension but it only helps in managing its symptoms. Chemical Composition of Diovan
Active ingredient present in Diovan is Valsartan. The inactive ingredients of the drug are cellulose compounds, crospovidone, gelatin, iron oxides, magnesium stearate, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, and titanium dioxide.
How Valsartan Works?
Valsartan works by blocking the angiotensin II receptors in the body which prevents the binding of angiotensin II hormone to its receptors. This hormone is responsible for regulating blood pressure as well as maintaining fluid balance. Angiotensin II receptors, when activated, causes the blood vessels to narrow and kidneys to retain salt and water. Thus, Valsartan blocks this receptor and prevents its actions. This allows the peripheral blood vessels to widen thereby allowing more space and less resistance in these blood vessels. This mechanism helps Valsartan to reduce the blood pressure and increase the amount of fluid removed from the blood by the kidneys. The reduced fluid amount in the blood vessels also lessens the pressure and resistance in the blood vessels. Therefore the combined effect of this drug helps to treat high blood pressure.
