Lovenox Usages Instructions
Patients prescribed with Lovenox should take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. One should not alter the dosage without consulting the doctor. Lovenox injection is injected either under the skin or into vein through an Intravenous injection. Patients can self-inject Lovenox by themselves, provided that they are trained by their doctor on how to self-inject. Individuals who are not comfortable with self-injected procedure should not attempt to self-inject the drug. The following usage instructions should be kept in mind while self-injecting the drug:
- The injection should be taken at different places on stomach. One should not inject the drug at the same place two times in a row.
- One should use disposable needle for taking the injection that is meant for single use only.
- The disposable needle should be immediately disposed in a puncture-proof container after the use.
Lovenox Dosage Instructions
Lovenox dosage is determined by the doctor by assessing the patient's weight, kidney function, other medical conditions and indication. Lovenox dosages for the treatment of different problems include:
- The standard dosage of Lovenox for preventing blood clots in individuals undergoing abdominal surgery is 40 mg of drug injected once in a day for the period of 7-10 days. The first dose of the drug should be injected two hours before the surgery.
- Recommended dosage of Lovenox for preventing blood clots in patients undergoing hip replacement surgery or knee replacement surgery is 30 mg twice in a day for a period of 7 to 10 days. The initial dose of the drug should be started after 12 to 24 hours of the surgery.
- Recommended dose of the drug for preventing blood clots in patients who are ill and unable to move is 40 mg taken once in a day for the period of 6 to 11 days.
- Lovenox dose recommended to patients after unstable angina is 1 mg of drug prescribed per kg of the patient’s weight. The drug is taken every 12 hours and is taken in combination with aspirin.
Missed and Overdose
In case if a patient has missed a dose of the drug, then the patient should inject it on remembering it. If it is almost time for the next dose then the patient should skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. One should never inject double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Taking too much of Lovenox can prove quite dangerous and it can also potentially increase the risk of internal bleeding. Overdose victims must be provided with immediate medical attention. One can also consult to their local poison centre for necessary advice. Some of the overdose symptoms include easy bruising, cuts that are slow to stop bleeding, signs of bleeding in the brain.
Storage
Lovenox should be ideally stored at room temperature 25°C. This drug should be protected from excess heat and moisture. Expired or unused drug should be safely disposed.
