Spiriva Usage Instructions

Patients are advised to follow the exact dosage as prescribed by the doctor. Following instructions must be strictly followed by the users:

  • Do not open or swallow the capsule.
  • One must inhale the capsule powder only by using the HandiHaler device.
  • The capsule should be pierced only once by using the HandiHaler device.
  • Avoid the capsule powder from entering the eyes. In case the powder enters the eyes it is advised to wash your eyes immediately with cold water.

Dosage and Instructions

The recommended dose of Spiriva is two inhalations of the powder contents of one Spiriva capsule taken once in a day. Patients should administer Spiriva by placing the capsule in the center chamber of the HandiHaler device. The capsule is opened by pressing and releasing the piercing button of the HandiHaler device. The drug is dispersed into the air which the patient inhales through the mouthpiece.

Missed and Overdose of Spiriva

It is common for patients to miss a dose of the drug. In case of Tiotropium missed dose, one should take it immediately. If it is time for the next dose then one should resume with the usual dosage. Doubling the dose of Spiriva may result in unwanted side effect.

In the case of an overdose one must immediately consult the doctor or should contact their local Poisons Information Centre for advice. One should also visit to the nearest hospital to avail urgent medical attention. Some of the overdose symptoms can include fast or irregular heartbeat, blurred vision, nausea, stomach pain, dry mouth, constipation and difficulty in passing urine.

Storage Instructions

Spiriva must be properly stored to maintain its efficacy till the very end. The capsules must be kept in a cool and dry place and the temperature must stay below 25 degrees Celsius. One should avoid refrigerating the medication. The drug should be kept out of the reach of children and pets. The capsule must be kept intact in their pack until and unless it has to be used. Unused and expired medication must be safely disposed.
