Singulair Side Effects
Patients taking Singulair may experience either common or severe side-effects. It may happen that some patients do not experience any of its symptoms. Common side-effects usually go away with regular dosage and therefore do not require medical intervention. Some of the common side-effects associated with the drug are:
- Headache
- Stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea
- Feeling tired
- Tooth pain
- Mild rash
- Stuffy nose, sore throat, etc.
Some of the serious side-effects which needs to be reported to a doctor immediately are:
- Allergic reactions
- Severe skin reactions
- Unusual bleeding in nose, mouth, vagina or rectum
- Tremors or shaking
- Severe sinus pain
- Worsening asthma symptoms
- Anxiety, depression, etc.
Drug interactions of Singulair
Before taking Montelukast, it is necessary to tell doctors about all non-prescription, prescriptions, herbal or natural medicines they are taking or planning to take. It is prudent to tell doctors about these medications they are taking, as these medications can potentially interact with Singulair and cause adverse reactions. Some of the drugs that might interact with Singulair include:
- Certain anticonvulsants like phenobarbital, pentobarbital, etc.
- Rifamycin antibiotics like rifabutin, Rifampin, rifapentine, etc.
Singulair Important Warning and Precautions
Patients taking Singulair must be aware of important warning and precautions associated with this drug. Thus, they are advised not to take the drug without a doctor’s consultation. In certain situations, doctor’s approval is necessary before taking this drug. Some of those conditions are:
- Phenylketonuria
- Liver disease
- Pregnancy or breast-feeding
Although, the medication does not affect the ability of driving a car or operating machinery, it is advised to avoid doing these activities in case a patient experiences dizziness and drowsiness after taking Montelukast.
Singulair is contraindicated in the following situations:
- Patient suffers from rare hereditary problem of galactose intolerance
- Patien is allergic to its active or inactive ingredient
- The 10 mg tablet of Singulair is not recommended to children under 15 years of age.
